Earth Summit for Youth

In January, 15-29 the Smithsonian Institution, HabitatNet/Souhegan
High School, Amigos de Sian Ka´an
UNESCO Bio-Reserve and El Eden Ecological Reserve will be hosting the
International Earth Summit for Youth on Global Biodiversity, that
will take place at El Eden Ecological Reserve, Quintana Roo.
Students and teachers from the United States, France, India, Germany,
Italy, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands and Mexico will be staying at El
Eden. They will develope biodiversity monitoring projects, and will
establish permanent plots.
At the end of the summit students will have a Press Conference and
will sign a Biodiversity Accord to be sent to the United Nations for
next Earth Day in July 2005.
Several activities have been organized to make this a fun and unforgettable
experience for all the students and teachers. There will be presentations
about the work they are doing at home, bat mist netting, night hiking
in the forest, “multi-lingual” games, music, etc.
The summit has been divided into two identical sessions: the first
one from January 15 to 22 and the second from January 22 to 29. Over
a total of 80 participants will attend the 2-week period.
